Review of Using iPad for a full Semester

Updated: May 9, 2021

During the summers of 2020, I got to know about using iPad and Apple Pencil for studying and was immediately impressed by the idea. After lots of requests to parents and some luck, I finally managed to purchase an iPad AIR 3 Wifi Only 64 GB Model for 44k and Apple Pencil 1st Gen, for 8.5k in August.

I am now going to share my experience of using the iPad for studying and how I used it throughout my online semester at IIT Kanpur.

1) I personally enjoyed studying using the iPad,and it made things really ‘smooth’ for me. I used to directly make mini revision notes out of the notes sent by the instructor without putting in much effort.

2) I used to appear in exams through my iPad and directly uploaded pdf on the portal instead of going through the hassle of scanning. This saved me some crucial minutes at the end of exams and allowed me to revise.

3) I created notebooks of different subjects for practicing questions and used them to practice there only. This allowed me to easily save my work and go back if I ever wanted to check a solution to the question that I had earlier solved. This used to be a big problem when I used to have ‘normal’ notebooks because creating five large notebooks for five different subjects was not really practical, and I used to only create one rough notebook in which I used to practice all the time. And, a lot of times, I had to go back to some question that I did earlier but could not find it because I hadn’t kept track of it.

4) I used to directly annotate notes sent out by the instructor and make suitable edits as per my need without any problem. All my notes were backed up immediately to OneDrive, where I had a 1 TB limit, thanks to IIT Kanpur, and therefore, I could access my notes anywhere and anytime.

All in all, purchasing an iPad for studying is totally worth it if you can financially afford it and your institute allows you to bring iPad in class for note-taking .

One of the major reasons that convinced me to buy the iPad was that all these paper-based notes that we make will not always be with us and may end up in some box in a garage or inside our bed if we don’t scan them and have a soft copy. At some point, I may have to look back at notes in the future or review something, and then it would make sense to have soft copies of all the notes. Since scanning and uploading didn’t sound feasible to me, I concluded that the iPad would be a great utility tool in long run and bought it.

PS- My handwriting sucks everywhere, so ignore the handwriting. For examples of beautiful notes, check out youtube!
